Catching up in Tucson

I know it has been a while since you have had and update here. The majority of my time has been taken up studying for my Amateur Radio License. There are three levels of to achieve Technician, General and Extra. I have wanted to get my License since I was in High School. Now I have done it and passed both the Technician, and General. I have made contacts in several states so far. I am also member of the Radio club here at RCW. I even have my own radio Kenwood TH-D74A and a lot more to learn.

It has not been all studying however. I have attended the Desert Woodcrafters and the Southern Arizona Woodturners meetings. The Woodcrafters will have a 2 by 4 competition at the March meeting. The objective is to see what you can make out of a 16 inch piece of 2 by 4. From other years it is amazing what these guys create.

Each meeting they have a show and tell, some of which you can see here.

See the pictures from the Arizona Desert Museum here.

The other night Sue and I went up to Gates Pass to get some sunset pictures.

Yesterday Tucson Woodcraft was celebrating 20 years of business. They had demonstrations all day, which I really enjoyed.

I have not forgotten about Habitat. I have been doing one day a week as part of a framing crew. Most of the work has been fixing probems created by the "professional crew". You know walls not plum, wrong size door openings, misplaced walls, etc. It has been a lot of work and a challenge.

Hope everyone back home have had a good winter.

Catching up with the past week activities

02/01/2020 - Woodcraft Arizona Wood Workers Show, Tucson Murals, Tucson Habitat, Desert Woodcrafters

Last weekend  I attended a Arizona Wood Workers Show at Woodcraft Phoenix. I saw some really great projects but I had a failed attempt to photograph them. I thought I had taken them but when at home there was nothing in the camera. Scott Philips (PBS The American Woodshop) was there and gave a number of presentations.

Sue went on a hike with the Desert Divas in downtown Tucson to view the wall murals on the streets. Here is a selection of what the viewed:

On Thursday I was assigned to photograph our site. I was on a new build site. The main work was correcting problems created by the "Professional Framers". This is a complex of a number of houses all single story slab homes with up to 5 bedrooms. Everything is on 24 inch centers with 2 by 6 external walls. One of the problems was that the extternal walls were not plum before the interior walls and trusses were erected. You can only imagine the problem this causes.

Next up today was the Desert Woodcrafters meeting. Each meeting member bring in projects to share. I will include a few pictures of the projects. The demo today was making Band Saw boxes.

Next week will be the Southern Arizona Woodturners Association meething.
